Master of singing line.

I have many favourite painters and one of the main figures on this list is Valentin Serov. Instead of praising his art for ages, i will give an example.

Portrait of unknown woman.  Pastel on paper.

Well? How can you not love the guy? And yet i can’t help listing several things that make me go back to his work time and time again.

Singing line. That’s what i call it because i can find no better definition. Just take a look. This line has it’s own melody, key, story. It’s phenomenal.

П. Portrait of T.P. Karsavina. Graphite pencil on paper.

Palette. Delicate and intelligent.

By the window. Oil on wood panel.

Horses. Serov’s horses deserve separate attention. It’s not just the knowledge of anatomy, it’s a separate aesthetic.

М.Ф. M.F. Mamontova

Portrait of S.M. Botkina. A combination of forthright prettiness and excessiveness with tension. Rather gloomy tones and most tender pink hues. Realistic rendering without overworking. Atmosphere. Incredible portrait.

М. Portrait of S.M. Botkina. Oil on canvas.

Portrait of Z.N Yusupova. The model wasn’t happy about the result. As far as i remember the critics weren’t fond of it either. I love this portrait. The rendering of the face and the contrast of its warm colours with the cool white chest. Flowing lines reminding of art nouveau used in composition and supported by the lines of the sofa and the floral design of the model’s dress. And the dog of course :) Love the dog.

Portrait of princess Yusupova. Oil on canvas.

Portrait of emperor Nikolai II. Serov struggled a lot with this portrait and finally achieved an exact expression of his idea. The portrait is as complex as it is simple. Emotional precision is striking and so is the way all artistic tools work for the main concept.

Design. Just take a look. Modern design, artistic experiments and revelations grow dim in comparison with these unlabored works. Both portraits are from the beginning of the XX century.

И. E.I. Roerich.

Л. G.L. Grishman.

I won’t talk here about obvious things like Serov’s mastery of psychological portrayal, about the Girl with peaches and Girl in Sunlight. But if you are in need of some freshness, sincerity and exquisite taste, take a trip to the Tretyakov Gallery or the Russian Museum or just look at some of Serov’s pieces online. Unforgettable impressions guaranteed.
